Actor estadounidense. Su debut en Broadway fue con la obra Antonio y Cleopatra (1947) y en Hollywood con Ciudad en sombras (1950). Se convirtió en estrella con la película El mayor espectáculo del mundo (1952), e interpretó al fornido, resuelto e íntegro personaje en películas épicas como Los diez mandamientos (1956), Ben-Hur (1959, premio de la Academia) y El tormento y el éxtasis (1965). También protagonizó Sed de mal (1958), El planeta de los simios (1968) y Los tres mosqueteros (1973), y dirigió y actuó en Marco Antonio y Cleopatra (1972) y Desafío en las profundidades (1982). Fue presidente de Screen Actors Guild (Gremio de actores de cine y televisión de EE.UU.) (1966–71) y en 1988 fue elegido presidente de National Rifle Association (Asociación de propietarios de armas de EE.UU.).
